Abstract

Hematological diseases are pathologies where blood and blood-forming organs are affected. These disorders denote a concerning public health topic in the aging population. Malignant hematological diseases comprise lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma, and malignant immunoproliferative disorders. Non-malignant hematological diseases comprise anemias, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, immunodeficiencies, autoimmune disorders, hemorrhagic disorders, and infection-related conditions. The present chapter provides an up-to-date introduction to epidemiology, clinical and laboratory features, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for a wide range of hematological disorders. We also review trends in immunology and genetics hematological research with emphasis on treatment by stem cells. Finally, directions to advance the field are discussed. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
