Abstract

A recent family of pesticides called neonicotinoids targets postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine esterase receptors. The first neonicotinoid was nithiazine, also known as 2-nitromethylene tetrahydro-1,3-thiazine, which Shell created in 1978. It is somewhat poisonous to animals and irritating to the skin and eyes. In mammals and insects, nithiazine acts as an agonist at the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. There are two possible exposure pathways: cutaneous contact and ingestion. Nithiazine field usage has been constrained by its poor photostability. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
