Abstract

Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) is one of the plants used in TPM as a spice, as well as a medicine. Various medicinal properties have been attributed to black pepper in TPM, including memory enhancer, appetizer, diuretic, emmenagogue, and antidote and used for the treatment of toothache, reproductive cough, dyspnea, gastrointestinal problems, and splenomegaly, either orally or topically. Clinical studies showed that black pepper is effective in decreasing desire for nicotine use and appetite suppression. Also, preclinical evidence suggests beneficial effects of black pepper on obesity, seizure, and memory. High doses of black pepper may cause urinary tract pain, urticaria, and neurological complications; however, daily intake as spice in culinary and within the proper dose is safe. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
