Abstract

BACKGROUND: Continuous assessment and improvement of nursing care quality are essential components within healthcare provider systems. Therefore, the current study assessed the effect of training based on the James Brown model on the quality of nursing care provided in the trauma department. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a quasi-experimental investigation with a control group conducted from April to July 2023. The study sample consisted of 60 nurses working in the trauma department of the Imam Khomeini Medical Center located in Ilam, Iran. Following the selection of research participants through a census method, the samples were randomly allocated into two distinct groups: a control group of 30 individuals and an intervention group comprising 30 individuals. The nurses in the intervention group underwent a training program based on the James Brown model for four weeks. The training sessions were conducted twice a week, lasting for 60 minutes. For data collection in this study, two questionnaires were utilized: a demographic information questionnaire and a questionnaire to assess the “scale of perception of nursing activities that contribute to nursing care quality (EPAECQC).” The data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23 software, with a significance level of less than 0.05 for the tests. RESULTS: Before the educational intervention, the nurses in both the control and intervention groups exhibited moderate average scores regarding the quality of care and nursing care. The nurses in the intervention group demonstrated significant improvements after the educational intervention. Specifically, there were substantial increases in average patient satisfaction scores (9.96 ± 1.24, P = 0.001), health promotion (10.27 ± 1.31, P = 0.001), prevention of complications (9.97 ± 1.52, P = 0.001), self-care and well-being (11.87 ± 2.65, P = 0.003), high liability and accuracy (20.07 ± 2.82, P = 0.001), as well as the overall quality of nursing care (80.53 ± 6.84, P = 0.001). These improvements were observed when comparing the post-intervention results to the pre-intervention and control groups. However, no statistically significant difference was observed in the average performance feedback score (12.26 ± 1.96, P = 0.107) and Nursing Care Organization (6.37 ± 1.27, P = 0.178). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study demonstrated the efficacy of the educational intervention based on the James Brown model in improving various aspects of nursing care and the overall quality of nursing care. This educational model may be taken into consideration in the planning of health interventions by health policy makers to promote the health status of the community. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
