Abstract

UV radiation is carcinogenic to humans due to its mutagenic effects on DNA. DNA damage is then sensed by pattern recognition receptors, resulting in immune-mediated responses. UV radiation-induced cancers are, thus, considered the highest immunogenic tumors, among which is melanoma. The present chapter focuses mainly on the immunological aspects of melanoma from brief introduction of the inflammatory mediators (mast cells, macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells) and pathways (MAPK and NF-κB) and immune responses (T cells, B-cells, and dendritic cells) to the evaluation of emerging immunotherapeutic opportunities (immune checkpoint inhibitors, cytokine-based immunotherapies, vaccines, and biochemotherapy). © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
