Abstract

Previous studies demonstrated that DNA methylation analysis in the tissue, blood, and stool samples could help find diagnostic biomarkers for colorectal cancer (CRC) at an early stage. In the current systematic review and meta-analysis, we analyzed studies conducted on methylation analysis in colorectal cancer among Iranian patients. Therefore, published studies on DNA methylation in Iranian CRC patients have been searched in international electronic databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and Science Direct, up to 20 May 2018. Our analysis indicated that the most commonly used method for evaluating DNA methylation was applying MSP (Methylation-Specific polymerase chain reaction) method with 22 studies. However, other used methods for DNA methylation analysis were MS-HRM (3 studies), MSI analysis (MSRE-PCR), and methylight method with one original study. Also, our meta-analysis showed the significant association of methylation of SFRP2 (P-value = 0.037), ALX4 (P-value<0.001), MGMT (P-value= 0.002), and SEPT9 (P-value<0.001) genes with CRC patients in Iranian population. However, evaluating the association between methylation of other genes with CRC needs to be analyzed in studies with larger sample sizes. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
