Abstract

The aplasia of the salivary glands is a rare condition that can cause severe xerostomia. There have been a few reports of major salivary gland (MSG) aplasia in the literature up until now. Due to its rarity and compensational hypertrophy of other glands, it is hard to diagnose this phenomenon, or the diagnosis happens much later than the appearance of symptoms. Late diagnosis can create many complications for the patient which would have been avoidable if the clinicians were more informed about this condition. There has not been a review working on the characteristics and consequences of late diagnosis of MSG aplasia especially bilateral MSG aplasia based on our research. This review on salivary gland aplasia can be helpful in informing the clinician about the average age of first symptoms, signs and symptoms themselves, associated abnormality and tumors, and much more helpful information. This article also presents a case of a 16-year-old boy who was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department of Dentistry School of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He had multiple caries and failed endodontic treatments and dentists had failed to find the reason for all these problems. © 2023 Asian AOMS, ASOMP, JSOP, JSOMS, JSOM, and JAMI
