Abstract

Xyrem is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant with sedative-hypnotic properties. It has been approved as an efficient treatment for improving cataplexy attacks and excessive daytime sleepiness in patients diagnosed with narcolepsy. Xyrem is classified as schedule III controlled substances, capable of causing dependence and abuse in high therapeutic doses. The risk of poisoning and fatality with Xyrem in medical use is rare. Sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), the active ingredient in Xyrem, is used most frequently as a drug-facilitated sexual assault, or “date rape drug.” Therefore, Xyrem is specifically prescribed and dispensed under a strict regulations program. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
