Abstract

Times Beach, Missouri, was a small community in the United States of America located along the Meramec River. In 1972, the city hired a waste hauler to oil the road due to a dust problem and a shortage of pavement funds. The trouble began when he sprayed the street with toxic waste containing dioxins from Northeastern Pharmaceutical and Chemical Company (NEPACCO) and Syntex, NEPACCO's controlling company. Dioxins could accumulate in adipose tissue, causing various health issues, including miscarriage and rashes. The contaminated soil and debris were burnt between 1996 and 1997 to clean up the site, done by the US Environmental Protection Agency and Syntex Agribusiness. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
