Abstract

Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) (CSA 82-68-8) is a polychlorinated nitrobenzene that has been used as a fungicide on seed treatment of field crops and vegetables (e.g., barley, corn, cotton, oats, rice, wheat, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, tulips, and garlic), as well as in grass, lawn flowers, ornamental shrubs, and gardens, and also slime inhibitor in industrial waters. While very little information is available on the effects of PCNB absorption via inhalation or dermal contact, where large differences in the effects are exhibited among absorbed species from the gastrointestinal tract. It may also cause acute and short-term toxicity both in humans and animals. Hexachlorobenzene is a major contaminant in the material, and dioxins have also been reported as contaminants in some cases. Contaminants could account for some manifestations of reported PCNB toxicity. Nevertheless, acute or chronic exposure to higher level than which is present in the environment will be useful in building the complete toxicological profile to assess safety. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
