Abstract

Coloring materials are classified as dyes and pigments. Dyes are soluble in their vehicle and make a solution; pigments are insoluble and result in a suspension. Dyes are used to impart color to textile, paints, cosmetics, food, and medicines. There are several ways to classify dyes based on the source of materials, the chemical structure, the nuclear structure, and industrial classification. One of the essential issues in applying dyes is safety, so there are many limitations and legislation on the use of dyes in different countries. Dyes and colorants showed several toxicities. Therefore, they need to be more studied, and if needed; their use should be limited or even banned. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
