Abstract

Nitrocellulose (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 9004-70-0) was once used to develop explosive compounds for artillery ammunition but it is now used in a wide variety of applications. There are no reports on human dose studies or mechanisms of toxicity. Studies on acute, subchronic, and chronic animal doses found no significant adverse effects, except fiber impaction in the lower intestine. An epidemiologic study has linked nitrocellulose exposure to rectal cancer, but the effects of nitrocellulose exposure cannot be confirmed because of confounding effects of the other incorporated chemicals. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
