Abstract

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacted healthcare systems globally, posing unique challenges for healthcare professionals, including early career psychiatrists (ECPs). However, the experiences faced by ECPs in Iran remain understudied. Objectives: This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of ECPs in Iran, investigating the impact of the pandemic on their psychological well-being, workplace conditions, and educational opportunities. Methods: A qualitative study through individual, in-depth interviews was conducted among ECPs in Iran. Data were analyzed thematically. Results: A total of 19 ECPs in Iran took part in the interviews. The key themes that emerged from the analysis were: (1) Psychological and personal well-being of ECPs during Covid-19; (2) Educational and training challenges of ECPs during Covid-19; (3) Workplace factors, changes, and administrative support for ECPs during Covid-19; and (4) Transformations in psychiatric practice for ECPs during and after Covid-19. Conclusion: Our findings show widespread distress and burnout, disrupted training, inadequate supervision, and telepsychiatry challenges. These results underscore the need for proactive mental health programs, blended clinical education, clear workplace protocols with equitable resources, and resilient, user-friendly telepsychiatry systems to safeguard ECPs in future crises. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
