Abstract

Aims: Obesity is one of the most serious health-related concerns in the world associated with an increase in chronic illness and mortality. Studies have shown that overweightness can lead to decreased physical activity in individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of carbohydrate (CHO) mouth rinsing on the functional capacity of overweight women. Methods: Forty overweight women who were referred to the sports medicine department were randomly divided into placebo or supplement groups. Both groups were initially tested on a treadmill using the Ramp protocol till to exhaustion, and a chest and leg press strength tests with 70% of 1 repetition maximal (1RM). After 72 h, the intervention group received a 6% CHO solution and the control group received a non-CHO solution for mouth rinsing during the mentioned tests. The results before and after mouth rinsing compared based on SPSS software. The level of significance was considered 0.05. Results: Of the forty participants, 33 entered in the final analysis. The results showed that the time to exhaustion during running on the treadmill was significantly increased in the intervention group (p = 0.03). In terms of strength performance, the repetitions of leg press (p = 0.16) and chest press (p = 0.14) showed no significant difference between the two groups. Discussion: According to the results, it seems that mouth rinsing with CHO solution during exercise can increase the functional capacity throughout treadmill running in overweight women but does not increase the number of repetitions in strength performance. © 2020
