Abstract

The aim of this chapter was to introduce the science of toxicology from different aspects from throughout Iran. The practice and study of medicine in Persia (Iran) dates back to at least the CE 3rd century. Iran in the middle ages made early and important contributions to toxicology because of the possible use of poison and antidotes by the then kings and their enemies. Some of the religious leaders and the kings were killed by poisons. Therefore the study of poisons, their identity and methods of detection, as well as the prevention and treatment of poisoning began very soon in Iran. The history of modern toxicology in Iran dates back to the establishment of universities, especially the university of Tehran. Iran is now very strong in the science of toxicology regarding the existence of many well-established drug and poison information centers, special poison treatment centers, and the presence of well-educated toxicologists. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
