Abstract

Mastic is the oleo-gum resin obtained from Pistacia lentiscus L. (Anacardiaceae). It contains a wide variety of monoterpenes and terpenoids such as α-pinene, β-pinene, and β-myrcene in the essential oil, as well as triterpenoids and resinous compounds. Mastic has a hot and dry nature and is traditionally used in TPM for gastrointestinal problems due to cold and/or wet dystemperament. It is also recommended for periodontal problems and to keep dental hygiene. Current clinical studies confirm the effectiveness of mastic in colitis, dyspepsia, and dental problems. Also, it has shown protective effects on animal models of dermatitis and fatty liver disease. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
