Abstract

In this paper it is argued that qualia are physical. A conscious percept (or a quale) is a physical system that consists of many elements (called qubits) that are so highly (and intricately) ordered that they collectively form a unified whole which is more than and different from the sum of its parts. On the other hand, subliminal and preconscious percepts are physical systems whose elements are separate, disorganized, and incoherent. Furthermore, it is argued that the same fundamental physical mechanism that underlies the transition from fluidity to superfluidity (and the transition from conductivity to superconductivity), is also responsible for the transition from perception to something that could be called super-perception (or consciousness). © 2023 The Institute of Mind and Behavior, Inc.
