Abstract

The use of nanomaterials to enhance the properties and efficiency of fiber filters has been a growing area of research since the late 2000s. This scoping review analyzes the state of knowledge on the types of nanomaterials used, incorporation methods, and improvements in filter performance for air filtration applications. This review was conducted in accordance with the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science using “fiber filter,” “efficiency,” and “Nanomaterial” keywords. The inclusion criteria comprised peer-reviewed studies published in English until November 1, 2023, focusing on using nanomaterials in fiber filters for air filtration applications. This study identifies China, Korea, India, Iran, and the USA as active contributors to nanofiber research, supported by international collaborations. Electrospinning was identified as the predominant method for synthesizing nanofibers from polymers, ceramics, and composites. By integrating nanomaterials–such as metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon-based materials, herbal additives, MOFs, and chitosan–researchers enhanced fiber filter properties. These modifications improve filtration efficiency, reduce pressure drop, boost thermal/electrical performance, and introduce antimicrobial functionality. While nanomaterial integration offers a promising pathway to advanced filter design, future work must prioritize optimizing material selection, ensuring stability, and addressing environmental impacts. © 2026 The Author(s).
