Abstract

Background: Some articulatory-kinematic treatments have replicated effects in patients with Apraxia of Speech (AOS). However, due to the importance of work on prosody and the desirable application of the Principles of Motor Learning (PML) for establishing accurate speech movements, it seems characteristics of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), which is one of the effective treatments for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), make it eligible for treating AOS. Aims: This study aims to investigate the efficacy of DTTC in patients with AOS. Methods & Procedures: Six individuals completed all phases of this single-subject study with a concurrent Multiple Baseline Design (MBD) across participants. The percentage of accuracy for treated and untreated targets during probe sessions was used as the outcome measure to assess the acquisition and response generalization of treatment effects. Between- and within-participant visual analyses involving Conservative Dual Criterion (CDC) and the calculation of effect sizes were used to demonstrate changes across participants and phases for each participant. Outcomes & Results: Based on visual analysis, most participants showed improvement during the treatment phase. Based on effect sizes, all participants improved in treated targets, except for participants 6 (during treatment and follow-up) and 8 (in follow-up). Improvements in untreated targets were noted for all except participants 2 and 6 (during treatment and follow-up) and participant 8 (in follow-up). Conclusions: Calculation of effect sizes showed the efficacy of DTTC in most participants of this study in the acquisition, generalization and maintenance of treatment effects. © 2026 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
