What Islamic Bioethics Offers to Global Bioethics

Abstract

In the era of globalisation and multiculturalism, participation of Islamic bioethics in a dialogue with other religious-based bioethics is crucial. Such a dialogue within a rigorous examination of comparative religious ethics would help scholars in the field share their concerns as well as practical solutions for bioethical dilemmas. This chapter presents five commentaries from renowned Muslim, Christian, and Jewish bioethicists responding to the question: what does Islamic bioethics offer to global bioethics? Each author thoughtfully examines this question based on his or her own cultural and religious background. Each commentary elaborates on the importance of Islamic bioethics in contemporary bioethics; how it contributes to global bioethics; what new concepts it offers; as well as what can be learned. This chapter provides a platform for a multi-faith bioethics dialogue with the aim of better understanding Islamic bioethics. © 2018 by World Scientific Publishing Europe Ltd.
