Abstract

This is a validation of Katz tool in Activities of Daily Living in institutionalized elderly. People 60+ years (n = 157), obtained from a nursing home. The Persian versions of ADL-Katz, MMSE, FAAM, and SF-12 were administered. Concurrent validity examined between three assessors. Internal consistency was high (α = 0.806). By deleting only feeding item, Cronbach’s α coefficient was increased. Intraclass correlation coefficient between total score of the self-reported and assessors was 0.959, and between self-reported and the caregivers was 0.963. The best consistency between assessors was in toileting and dressing, and the weakest correlation was in bathing. A robust correlation between SF-12 and ADL domains was in physical role and function. Correlation coefficients between total FAAM, FAAM-ADL scores and self-reported ADL were −0.758 and −0.785. For the first factor, high scores were for bathing, maintaining continence, toileting, and transferring. The second factors were dressing and feeding. This study demonstrated reliability and validity of the self-report ADL-Katz, with no difference between self-report and direct observation rating of physical abilities among institutionalized elderly. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
