Abstract

The immune system is composed of a number of organs and tissues that work together to promote immune cell development and maturation or to concentrate immune responses against an antigen. The anatomical organization of immune cells in lymphoid tissues and their ability to circulate and migrate between blood, lymph, and tissues play an important role in triggering immune responses. In this chapter, we will describe the primary and secondary lymphoid organs, their structures, and their roles in the production and maturation of the various immune cells as well as in immunity. Finally, the significance of the lymphoid organs in immune cell trafficking is also discussed. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
