Abstract

Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are rare intracranial masses which most often are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. With major advances in diagnostic tools especially in ultrasound during recent decades, prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomalies has been developed. Prenatal detection of ACs at distinct intracranial locations and even in early life of a first few months of gestational age has been promising. The most common worries of parents after detection of ACs during a routine fetal sonographic study are related to the natural course, outcome of ACs, and subsequently their decision about the fate of the pregnancy. Nevertheless, the etiology, pathogenesis, and natural course of ACs, the periodicity of clinical and radiological follow-up, and the expectant management and neurodevelopmental prognosis of these children are not precisely known. In this chapter, the prenatal detection and the postnatal course are described. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
