Abstract

After the skin, the gastrointestinal (GI) tract provides one of the largest interfaces in humans. This interface can interact with the external world and with the internal world as well. Therefore, the gut is seen as a sensory organ where chemicals and microorganisms receive sensory information and then, the effector systems including the endocrine, immune, neural, and organ defense systems are triggered in response to this information. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.
