Abstract

The world population is aging, and diseases related to age, such as neurodegenerative diseases, are increasing. Oxidative stress is one of the contributing factors in neurodegenerative diseases. Hence, diets rich in antioxidants may be helpful in preventing, postponing, or controlling the progressive processes of these diseases. General aspects of prevention and controlling neurodegenerative diseases by dietary factors and nutritional supplements are discussed here. Furthermore, at the end stages of neurodegenerative diseases swallowing may be impaired and dysphagia may arise. In the severe stages, the patient is nil by mouth. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
