Abstract

Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), with a notable increase in the health care and economic burden over recent years. This letter highlights the critical need for improved survivorship care, particularly addressing cancer-related lymphedema, which remains under-recognized in this region. Also, there is a significant gap in the management of lymphedema among cancer survivors. The lack of comprehensive surveillance systems and inadequate insurance policies for survivorship complications further complicate care delivery. This letter draws attention to the specific challenges and improvements faced by health care systems in EMR countries, such as Iraq, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. Recommendations include conducting epidemiological studies, enhancing healthcare provider education, and developing evidence-based clinical guidelines tailored to local contexts. By prioritizing lymphedema management among survivors of cancer, we can improve the quality of life for survivors and address the requirements in EMR health care systems. This call to action aims to engage researchers, clinicians, and policymakers in effective lymphedema management. Copyright © 2025 Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy, APTA.
