Abstract

Phyllanthus emblica L., known as emblic or amla, is a fruit containing phenolic compounds (e.g., gallic acid), flavonoids (e.g., quercetin), hydrolysable tannins, alkaloids, organic acids, and considerable amounts of vitamin C. There are many references to amla in TPM literature. In addition to beneficial effects on the heart, this fruit can improve gastrointestinal, neurologic, and sexual functions. Additionally, amla oil can hasten hair growth and retain hair color. Recent RCTs have demonstrated that amla can have beneficial effects on systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, nonerosive reflux disease, and chronic periodontitis. Moreover, topical use of amla has antiaging and lightening effects on skin. Preclinical studies suggest that amla has protective effects on cardiac, gastrointestinal, and kidney tissues. Enhancement of memory and cognition has also been demonstrated in animal studies. Amla is generally safe, but should be used with caution in bleeding disorders and concurrent administration with anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and antidiabetic drugs. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
