Abstract

Malva sylvestris and M. neglecta (Malvaceae), commonly known as mallow, have a cold and wet nature. Aerial parts, especially the flowers, are rich in mucilaginous compounds and are medicinally used. It is traditionally used for cough and cold due to soothing effects, as a laxative in constipation, and in skin diseases due to dryness. Clinical studies also confirmed the health benefits of mallow as a laxative and in eczema, atopic dermatitis, radiotherapy-induced mucositis and proctitis. Preclinical studies also showed therapeutic activity of the plant in colitis and wound healing. Due to its high mucilage which can trap the other medicines and affect their pharmacokinetics, conventional medicines should be taken 1 hour before or several hours after mallow preparations. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
