Abstract

The development of novel biomaterials for biomedical applications, particularly in bone tissue engineering, is essential to respond the growing need for effective medical treatments. Zirconium-modified calcium silicate ceramic baghdadite exhibits promising bioactivity, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties suitable for bone regeneration. Traditional synthesis methods for baghdadite nanoparticles face challenges such as long processing times, high temperatures, and impure products. Unlike traditional sol–gel methods, that rely on acidic conditions for precursor hydrolysis, this study proposes a strategy that utilizes a basic medium that aligns well with microwave irradiation to facilitate rapid uniform heating and improve nanoparticle formation. This novel approach significantly reduces the synthesis time, simplifies the reaction conditions, and provides a sustainable and scalable alternative for the efficient production of baghdadite nanoparticles with potential biomedical applications. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and thermal analysis, confirming their high quality and potential for biomedical applications. Thus, the synthesis strategy for baghdadite nanoparticles described here is distinctive, rapid, facile, and energy-efficient, and yields high-purity nanoscale products, emphasizing its potential impact on biomedical applications. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
