Abstract

To the Editor: In a three-year-old boy who was known to have asthma, bilateral otitis media developed for which ampicillin (Omnipen) was prescribed. Because the parents were on a pilgrimage to Mecca, he was under the care of his aunt. When she opened the bottle of ampicillin for reconstitution she fell down and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was found to be dyspneic and apprehensive. An urticarial rash covered the body. The blood pressure was 80/60 mm Hg. She responded well to epinephrine and intravenous fluids. On further inquiry she admitted that she was allergic to penicillin.
