Abstract

BACKGROUND: Due to the high‑risk cases of mothers during the postpartum period, it is essential to focus on the knowledge of midwives regarding postpartum hemorrhage by implementing various training programs. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an educational program on the knowledge of early postpartum hemorrhage among novice midwives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a field trial with a pretest–posttest design conducted on novice midwives at the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2024. The intervention group received the Case‑Based Learning method. Subjects were asked to respond to a 20‑item knowledge questionnaire about early postpartum hemorrhage before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the paired t‑test in SPSS v16. RESULTS: The baseline total mean ± SD scores for knowledge in the interventional group were 7.7 ± 4.3, and after the implementation of the educational program, the scores increased to 17.75 ± 2.5. The results of the paired t‑test showed a statistically significant difference in the total and three dimensions of knowledge scores (midwifery tasks, postpartum hemorrhage, blood transfusion) before and after the intervention (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to use the Case‑Based Educational Program method to increase knowledge about obstetric emergencies among health professionals, such as midwives. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
