Abstract

The development of Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) catopulted the field of cardiothoracic surgery into a new dimension - one that changed the lives of individuals with congenital and acquired heart disease worldwide. Despite its contributions, CPB has clear limitations and creates unique challenges for clinicians and patients alike, stemming from profound hemostatic pertubations and accompanying risk for bleeding and possibly thrombotic complications. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008.
