Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence rate and predictors of locoregional recurrence (LRR) of breast cancer in women. Methods: A total number of 4652 records of women with breast cancer who had been treated in Seyed-Al-Shohada Hospital (Isfahan, Iran) during 1982-2006 were investigated retrospectively. Prognostic impact of several factors on LRR was assessed by log-rank test and logistic regression analysis. Findings: During the follow-up period with median length of 11 years, 208 patients (4.5%) had experienced LRR. The median time of LRR was two years. In univariate analysis test, tumor size, existence of progesterone receptors, severity of lymph node involvements, and young age had relations with LRR. Multivariate analysis revealed LRR to be significantly related with lymph nodes involvement and young age. Conclusion: LRR was not common among women with breast cancer in Isfahan Province. However, some subgroups of patients with specific risk factors such as younger age, large tumors, and more involved lymph nodes may be at greater risk of developing malignancy.
