Abstract

Esophageal perforation constitutes a true emergency that demands immediate diagnosis and superior surgical judgment. As Anderson mentioned, the adjective 'spontaneous' should not imply the absence of precipitating factors or a previously normal esophagus; rather the term means rupture not resulting from more obvious forms of direct trauma, foreign bodies or instruments. Spontaneous rupture of the nondiseased esophagus is a rare occurrence, but one which is invariably fatal unless promptly recognized and treated. In this communication a patient with spontaneous rupture of the esophagus is discussed.
