Abstract

Background: Hydatid cyst is one of the common diseases among humans and livestock. Its importance is due to damages to vital organs. According to few studies conducted on Iranian children, this study aimed to evaluate children with hydatid cyst in two referral pediatric surgical medical center in Isfahan City, Iran. Methods: 91 children with definite diagnosis of hydatid disease admitted in Imam Hussein and Alzahra medical centers during 2008-2015 were enrolled in this study. Patients' demographic, clinical, radiological, and treatment modalities were collected through medical records. Findings: 51 patients were male. The most common age group was 6 to 9 years old. 58.24% were living in urban areas. The most common site of involvement was lung. Common symptoms included abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, and cough. The most common modality for treatment was surgical drainage and excision of the cyst. The recurrence rate was 7.69%. Most of the patients have one cyst with size of more than 50 mm. The prevalence of cysts with size of greater than 110 mm was low. Conclusion: According to our study, hydatid disease is an uncommon disease in age of less than 6 years and rare in less than 3 years old. Hydatid cyst is relatively more common in rural population. In children, in contrast to adult population, the involvement of the lungs is more prevalent than liver. © 2017, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS). All rights reserved.
