Abstract

The purpose of this article is to report the changes in serum activities of glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and alkaline phosphatase in opium victims, together with liver cell changes observed upon post-mortem examination. Liver function tests performed in 40 victims of opium do not support a marked hepatotoxic effect of morphine on liver cells except some nonspecific changes such as cloudy swelling in those with severe arterial hypoxia. More work is necessary.
