Abstract

Introduction: The treatment process and loss of aerobic fitness can weaken the body’s antioxidant status and increase the risk of disease recurrence in patients with breast cancer. Therefore, this study was performed with aim to investigate the effect of six weeks of moderate-intensity continuous running on oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation and aerobic power in female survivors of breast cancer. Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on 19 female survivors of breast cancer in the ward of radiotherapy and Oncology of Isfahan Seyedoshohad hospital in 2015. The subjects were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in six weeks of moderate-intensity continuous running (three session per week). Total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured by ELISA kits and aerobic power by Balke Protocol. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 20) using dependent and independent t-test and Smironov Kolmogrov. P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: The results of this study showed that total antioxidant capacity significantly increased (P=0.001) and malondialdehyde levels significantly decreased (P=0.003). Also, aerobic power significantly improved (P=0.001). Conclusion: Ssix weeks of moderate-intensity continuous running can improve the body’s antioxidant status and aerobic power in female survivors of breast cancer and may prevent breast cancer recurrence. © 2017, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.
