Abstract

The maternal mortality surveillance system is a retrospective policy aimed at investigating the deaths of pregnant mothers through reforming health system structures. The reduction in maternal mortality ratio (MMR) from 51 per 100000 live births in 1379 to 20 to 25 per 100000 in recent years is due to the implementation of this system, but the concern about the repetition of similar deaths under similar conditions is worrying, while the MMR in Iran is set to reach 9 per 100000 in 2030. Therefore, in order to achieve the desired level of MMR, we need a comprehensive determination to improve the life pattern by removing social, economic and cultural barriers so that pregnant mothers and their spouses can participate in providing and maintaining health. © 2026, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
