Abstract

Background: The famly hstory of stutterng s one of the most mportant factors for the predcton of recovery from stutterng. There s a hgh controversy about the rate of postve famly hstory of stutterng among people who stutter (PWS). In the present study, the famly hstory of stutterng n the first‑, second‑, and thrd‑degree relatves was nvestgated among a group of Kurdsh chldren who stuttered (CWS) close to the onset of the dsorder. Materials and Methods: One hundred and seventy‑two CWS, ncludng 46 females (24.60%) aged 2–5 years (mean age: 3.71 years, SD = 0.75) were consecutvely recruted. They were first examned close to the onset of the stutterng. Data about current and former stutterng among first‑, second‑, and thrd‑degree relatves were collected usng ntervews wth both parents. Data was descrbed and analyzed by ndependent sample t test or Ch‑square. Results: Among 172 CWS (mean age: 3.71 years, SD = 0.75), 119 (69.20%) reported a famly hstory of stutterng. Accordng to the result, the most famly hstory of stutterng was reported among thrd‑degree relatves (32.60%). Sxty‑five partcpants (37.80%) reported just one relatve wth stutterng. CWS wth a postve famly hstory of stutterng had no sgnficant dfference wth CWS wthout a postve famly hstory of stutterng n sex (P = 0.48) and age of stutterng onset (P = 0.96). Conclusion: The rate of postve famly hstory of stutterng among Kurdsh CWS s smlar to prevously reported data n the same age group. There was no sgnficant assocaton of famly hstory of stutterng wth sex and age on the onset of the dsorder. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
