Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible and progressive neurodegenerative disease, which has a pathogenesis of free radicals and oxidative stress. It has been suggested that treatment with antioxidant agents is helpful in prevention and treatment of AD. Studies have shown that red grape juice increased speed of learning and improvement of memory in Alzheimer's rats. Since red grape juice contains antioxidant agents, there have been concerted studies into red wine, grape juice, or particular components such as resveratrol (a type of natural phenol) on brain pathology and/or function. For some, the use of alcohol-containing beverages or extracts may not be practical but the use of grape juice is more amenable. Thus, red grape juice, which can be used by all people, has easy access, and is flavorful, can be considered a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
