Assessment of Laparotomy in Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Tuberculosis

Abstract

16,842 patients were studied from 1970-1976 at medical centers of Isfahan University. 30 cases were diagnosed as affected by gastrointestinal tuberculosis on the basis of complete physical examination, hematologic studies, microbiological tests of sputum, stomach juice, search on ascites fluid (Zeihl Nelson Stain for direct smear examination and culture), chest X-ray, barium studies, laparotomy, biopsy for histopathologic study and tuberculin test. There were 19 cases of intestinal and 11 cases of peritoneal involvement. On laparotomy, in addition to ascites, there were disseminated nodules on all viscera in 25 cases and masses which were due to the adhesion of the intestinal loop, peritoan and lymph nodes in 5 cases. There were tubercular granuloma in all cases.
