Abstract

Various types of orthoses have been designed for paraplegic subjects to assist them to walk and stand. The main purpose of using an orthosis is to decrease bone osteoporoses and to improve the physiological and psychological heath of individuals with Spinal Cord injury (SCI). However, it cannot be concluded from the literature that walking with orthosis decreases osteoporosis or not? The main aim of this research is to measure the loads transmitted by orthosis and anatomy to find the effects of using orthosis on loads transmitted by the body. 5 normal subjects were recruited in this research study to walk with a new type of Reciprocal Gait Orthosis (RGO0 with strain gages embedded on its lateral bar. The results of this research showed that the patterns of the loads applied on the orthosis differed from that of the orthosis. So it can be concluded that walking with an orthosis can influence the magnitude of bone osteoporosis. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
