Abstract

Background: The application of herbal medicine in oral diseases is due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, and anxiolytic effects. Moreover, herbal medicine can be effective in wound healing and supporting the immune system. The use of conventional corticosteroid therapy can have several side effects and has been linked with adverse drug reactions in oral lichen planus (OLP), treating the condition with medicinal plants has been very much considered. Aim: To provide an overview of herbal medications for OLP, we aim to categorize herbal medicines according to their impact on OLP treatment. Materials and Methods: Online databases of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched using the following keywords: “oral lichen plants”, “OLP”, “herbal agent”, “herbal medicine”, “herbal products”, “herbal drugs”, and “natural products”. In the second phase, the name of each herb and OLP were searched together in the mentioned databases. Results: In the first phase, 7,570 titles were retrieved, 586 abstracts were evaluated, and 27 articles were selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria. In the second phase, six more studies were added, resulting in the inclusion of 33 articles in the present review study. Conclusion: Herbal medicines may be considered effective adjuvants or alternatives to conventional therapies for the treatment of oral OLP, due to their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancerous, and anxiolytic properties and minimal side effects. © 2021 Elsevier GmbH
