Abstract

SMS is the simplest and most cost-effective method of promoting knowledge of how to prevent diseases and face them in a healthy manner used by the public in educational programs regarding health. In this study, the performance of Breast Self- Examination (BSE) using SMS is investigated in female students majoring in engineering and humanitarian sciences of Tarbiat Modarres University (2013). For this purpose, 108 individuals aged 22-30 were selected into two groups using random cluster sampling. The educational program was compiled using information from pre-test and after determining public educational requirements regarding research. The two groups were then tested simultaneously and the posttest (3 months after training) was taken. The data were then analyzed on a significant level (P < 0.005) using SPSS20 software and statistical parametrical (t-pair) and non-parametrical test (chi-square). The t-test results indicated that compared with pre-education phase, both groups had significant differences in average score of knowledge, attitude, and performance regarding BSE (P < = 0.001). The results also showed that knowledge, attitude, and performance of breast cancer and how BSE was performed through SMS was higher in student of humanitarian sciences compared to engineering students (P < =0.001).
