Abstract

Endophthalmitis is a severe, vision-threatening complication that can occur following open-globe injuries, presenting significant challenges to ocular health. This narrative review comprehensively examines the incidence, risk factors, microbial spectrum, clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies for endophthalmitis in the context of open-globe injuries. The review emphasizes the critical importance of prompt diagnosis and timely intervention to preserve visual function and prevent further complications. Key factors such as the nature of the injury, delays in treatment, and the presence of intraocular foreign bodies are discussed about their impact on prognosis. Additionally, the review explores evolving trends in antimicrobial therapy, surgical interventions, and preventive measures. By synthesizing current knowledge, this article aims to guide clinicians in optimizing the care of patients with open-globe injuries at risk for endophthalmitis and to identify areas for future research. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
