Abstract

In each healthy knee, there is a pair of crescent-shaped menisci which have a major role in the prevention of early osteoarthritis in the knee joint due to their role in dispersing the load placed across the joint. There are many problems in meniscal repair, and researchers are looking for alternative materials and structures to replace damaged menisci, or ways to increase the quality and speed of healing. In this regard, natural tissues from similar structures or synthetic materials are used and prepared using several different techniques such as tissue engineering or cell culture. Another problem is also considering how to stabilize the joint and the tissue within in it while healing occurs following reconstructive surgery of the meniscus. This review looks at these materials and surgical techniques. © 2014, Springer-Verlag London.
