Abstract

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms in different foods. For their growth, these bacteria need special nutrients named prebiotics. Probiotics could change the oral microbiome to prevent oral or dental infectious disease, and also, these valuable bacteria could form a dental biofilm to inhibit the biofilm formation of pathogenic bacteria. Genome sequencing of many probiotics like bifidobacteria and lactobacilli facilitated the complete genetic makeup of representative members of these bacteria. Dentistry sewage and saliva mixed with water waste in the dental unit could be screened for these probiotics. Probiogenomics could be recruited to the food industry and pharmacy to produce probiotics for inhibiting oral infection. This chapter reviews probiotics and metagenomics’ role in oral health. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
