Abstract

The simplest organic nitro compound is nitromethane with the chemical formula CH3NO2. It is colorless, oily liquid, with disagreeable odor which is highly flammable. It is a highly polar liquid that is frequently used in a range of industrial applications as a solvent. It is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, and dimethylformamide. Its vapor is heavier than air and may travel along the ground therefore, distant ignition is possible. It may break down accidentally due to shock, friction, or damage. If heated up or severely shocked, it can explode (especially if mixed with acids, bases). Nitromethane was originally manufactured for various applications including mining, construction, demolition, law enforcement, and military uses. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
