Abstract

Background: Car accidents are one of the main causes of maternal and childbirth deaths and account for up to %80 of trauma in pregnancy. Pregnancy is an emotionally sensitive period, so they need more care and support, and improving their social participation can improve the mother's general health. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate car accidents and social capital during pregnancy in Semnan city. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 936 pregnant women participated in the years 2020 - 2016. Through phone calls and explaining the objectives of the Semnan Birth Cohort Project to pregnant mothers, and after willing to participate freely, the consent form was completed in person. Information was collected through definite questionnaires and then analyzed with SPSS software. Results: The average age of pregnant women participating in the study was 29.2 with a standard deviation of 5 years. Out of %1.9 (n = 9) of pregnant women under 30 years who had a car accident, %22.2 (n = 2) were drivers and %77.8 (n = 7) were passengers in cars. In the second trimester, in the ≥ 30 age group, %7.2 (n = 33), and the > 30 age group, %2.3 (n = 11), were sometimes worried about thieves. In the second trimester, in the age group ≥ %1.7,30 (n = 9), and in the > 30 age group, %0.2 (n=11), were sometimes worried about harassment. Conclusion: Car accidents and social support are issues for the pregnant mother during pregnancy, which can have severe effects on the mother's health and their fetus. Therefore, training to prevent car accidents and the mental health of pregnant women, and the planning of authorities in this field can reduce its further consequences on the mother and the fetus. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
