Abstract

Sternal osteomyelitis with or without associated costal chondritis occurs infrequently. However, the disease produces such serious morbidity and mortality that it warrants prompt recognition and surgical treatment. The most common cause of sternal osteomyelitis and costal chondritis is secondary infection following sternotomy. A report of a patient with primary sternal osteomyelitis forms the basis of the paper.
